Shopping for maternity clothes can feel overwhelming—especially if you’re expecting your first baby. Your body is changing, your style might be shifting, and you want to feel good in what you wear. As an Edmonton newborn photographer, I’ve worked with so many amazing moms who have shared what makes them feel confident—and that includes finding the right maternity wear.
Whether you’re building a bump-friendly wardrobe for every day or planning a special maternity photoshoot, here are 10 helpful questions to ask yourself (or bring with you to the store, check out my personal fav The Fourth!) to make shopping for maternity clothes easier and more enjoyable.
Your third trimester is when you’ll likely rely most on maternity wear. Think ahead to what the weather will be like so you can stay comfortable.
If so, consider investing in pieces that offer easy nursing access. Many maternity clothes double as nursing wear—super practical for postpartum too!
If nursing access is important to you, think about what feels easiest and most discreet for you—especially when you’re out and about.
Are you working at an office? Running after toddlers? Lounging at home? The best maternity wardrobe is one that fits your lifestyle.
Stay true to your style! Just because you’re pregnant doesn’t mean you have to wear something that doesn’t feel like “you.” If you have a hard time pin pointing your style, start with colours or patterns you DON’T like and work backwards from there.
Knowing your usual style can help you find maternity options that feel familiar and flattering.
Planning a maternity or Edmonton newborn photoshoot, baby shower, or even a wedding? Make sure you’ve got an outfit that makes you feel beautiful and bump-friendly. The last thing you want to be doing is re-adjusting every time you move!
Be kind to your changing body. Comfort is key, and you might want to look for pieces that stretch and grow with you. Typically maternity clothing is true to size, so if you were a medium before pregnancy, you will likely be a medium in pregnancy attire as well.
Many modern maternity pieces are designed to last beyond pregnancy. Think stretchy fabrics, wrap tops, and nursing-friendly details. Once baby is born, most women will be approximately the same size they were at 5 months pregnant for a few months. Don’t rush to ‘bounce back’. This is your time to live in lounge wear and REST!
Look for breathable fabrics (bamboo is great at moisture/odour wicking!), soft seams, and clothes with gentle support if you’re feeling uncomfortable or sensitive. Belly bands are a great option too.
